The bear learned from the cold past: While he was freezing the past winters, he now decided to build a robust winter house with branches and moss to keep the cold draft out. He was looking forward to an undisturbed winter’s sleep. While he was building his house, the hen, the hedgehog, the pig, and the squirrel were observing the bear. They did not want to help him, though. When winter arrived and bear was getting snugged in in his house, each of the other animals suffered the cold and strong wind on their own. So they finally decided to ask the bear for shelter. He was kind enough to offer them a place to stay. When he wanted to get back to sleep, the hen, the hedgehog, the pig, and the squirrel turned the winter into a dance party, a singing contest, and everything other than a quiet house. When finally spring arrived and the hen, the hedgehog, the pig, and the squirrel left the house, bear was stealing himself away and reassembled his house elsewhere in the woods for some quite time after all.
