We love the Usborne books over here - whether it’s their lift-a-flap series, or the deep-dives into a specific topic. This time, we got the “It all starts with a seed” book - talking about how plants grow.

It is pretty detailed about the growth stages of plants and covers a variety of topics around how our food grows. It explains how bees and wind spread pollen and how a fruit grows because of it. It groups fruit by how they grow, and covers what parts of a vegetable plant we might eat. You can find information about root vegetables, nuts, tomatoes, how flour is being made, rice plantations, the chocolate tree, spices, tropical fruits, mushroom and edible seeds. All in all a well-rounded package into the rabbit hole of where our plant-based food is coming from.

Especially in a world of processed foods, pre-cut vegetables or fruit, and where city-living moves us farther away from seeing real plants through the stages of growth, this book is an essential contribution to educating children about the roots of our food, and hopefully, we can spark further interest in developing healthy, long-lasting eating habits and a curiosity about sustainable food-growth.
