“Meesha Makes Friends” by Tom Percival is about a girl called Meesha/Fiona/Rosa who often feels lonely and finds it difficult to make new friends. Fiona is creative and imaginative, but her shyness and her synthetic way of perceiving the world make it particularly difficult for her to socialise and find the right words.
One day she decides to take a different approach and makes her own friends. The friends give her strength and security. At a particularly lively party, Fiona meets someone who is interested in her hobby of making friends. All of a sudden, Fiona realises that friendship is above all an authentic expression of one's own personality that can be desired and celebrated. She can count on the goodwill of others to recognise and appreciate her for who she is.
The story teaches readers the importance of friendship, acceptance and self-confidence. It shows that true friends appreciate the different facets of a person and that it often takes courage to connect with others. In the end, Fiona not only finds friends, but also a place where she feels safe and loved.
