“Saving Mr Hoot” - Helen Stephens
Language of book for review:
German - “Huhu, Herr Schuhu”
Published also in:
English - “Saving Mr Hoot”
Ben discovers an owl in the tree in front of his house and makes friends with ‘Mr Hoot’ (“Herr Schuhu”), as he calls him. The two call to each other and seem to have a special relationship: The owl steals Ben's biscuit once and his glove another time while Ben waves to the owl. However, nobody else can see or hear the owl again, so nobody believes Ben that it actually exists.
Until the day the tree is to be felled. At the last moment, Ben stops the plan and invites everyone to shout ‘hoo-hoo’ in the evening. No sooner said than done, the spectators turn up to discover the owl. Ben calls and calls, but it remains silent. Can Ben convince the others that Mr Hoot really exists and that the tree must be saved?
A beautiful story about actionism and standing up for things that are important to you. It is also a wonderful statement that children should be taken seriously in their perceptions, feelings and contributions to events.
