Oh, the Squirrel and Bird books, I love them so much! In this one, Squirrel gets surprised by the first flower that appears out of nowhere. Squirrel further gets surrounded by flying birds and sounds that seem very unaccustomed after winter. Bird explains that it’s the dawn of spring which brings all these signs along. Of course, Squirrel takes ownership of the first flower around and tries to shield it from the wind that back in autumn made the leaves disappear. Squirrel also decides to protect the flower from bees and rain. Bird tries its best to teach Squirrel what such an early-spring flower truly needs.
I love how Alice Hemming and Nicola Slater combine so wonderfully the art of entertaining storytelling with educational depth. Sure, it’s not a textbook or anything. But every book in their series sparks wonderful interest in the flow of nature and picks up the right details per season to dive deeper into.
