“Iguais, mas nem tanto” - Elizabete da Cruz, Gabriela Gil
A fantastic way to celebrate language. The book displays on every double page a pair of Portuguese words that are exactly the same, but mean very different things in context. So it happens that the character Liu can eat a mango while Liu deals with his dirty sleeve.
These type of books don’t translate well into other languages. The concept certainly exists in most languages, but would contain very different words and meanings.
It’s a wonderful way to bring Portuguese in all its poetic richness closer to a child, and let the child too love the quirks and options that language is offering.
