Lester the hippo decides to go to town. His grandmother suggests Leo the raccoon to accompany Lester to town and give him lessons in good behaviour. While Lester receives the lessons well and is positive about his attitude to behave well, his actions speaks different words and Lester stumbles from one challenging situation to the next. Will he be able to overcome his shortcomings and learn some manners?
This book about manners and public behaviour does not keep the focus on saying “Thank you, please, and you are welcome” but on behaviour that truly makes a difference. Behaviours like cleaning up after you made a mess or being considerate when playing in the park have a more meaningful impact than throwing empty phrases around without any action behind it.
What makes this story particularly effective is its relatable portrayal of the struggle between intention and action. Lester’s journey is not just a series of mishaps, it is a realistic portrayal of the challenges we all face when trying to change habits, learn new lessons, or adapt to societal expectations. His humorous yet heartwarming misadventures highlight the importance of persistence, reflection, and the willingness to learn from one’s mistakes, reminding readers that improvement is often a rocky, but worthwhile, road.
